Austin Aerospace-Space Corridor

The Austin metropolitan area is assembling a space-industrial cluster that did not exist five years ago. SpaceX manufactures Starlink hardware and is building the Starmind AI satellite factory in Bastrop. Firefly Aerospace builds rockets and lunar landers in Cedar Park and Briggs. CesiumAstro is scaling phased array satellite communications manufacturing with $470 million in growth capital. Blue Origin is planning a $674 million manufacturing campus in Hutto. The Central Texas Spaceport Development Corporation is finalizing a defense innovation campus in Cedar Park. BAE Systems operates a $150 million sensor campus on Parmer Lane. Palantir and Anduril lead the Golden Dome missile defense software consortium from Austin offices. And SkyWater Fab 25 is the only DMEA Category 1A Trusted Foundry in Texas, fabricating the chips that go into the satellites these companies build.

The cluster converges on a 60-mile arc from Cedar Park in the northwest through central Austin to Bastrop in the southeast, with SpaceX's McGregor rocket engine test complex 100 miles north and Texas A&M's Cyclotron Institute 90 miles east in College Station certifying every chip before it flies. This page maps the Austin MSA cluster first, then extends it across the Texas Triangle to show how the corridor connects to the state's full space-industrial supply chain.

Why Austin — The Convergence Logic

The Austin aerospace cluster did not form around NASA, an Air Force base, or a legacy defense contractor campus. It formed around the same infrastructure that made Austin the fastest-growing technology market in the United States — grid power, permitting velocity, available land, engineering talent, and proximity to semiconductor manufacturing. SpaceX chose Bastrop for Starlink production because the site was 15 miles from Giga Texas and drew from the same labor pool. Firefly chose Cedar Park because Williamson County offered land for both a clean-room spacecraft facility and a 200-acre rocket test ranch within 30 miles. CesiumAstro scaled in Austin because it could recruit RF engineers from the same talent pool that feeds NXP, Cirrus Logic, Silicon Labs, and the broader Austin semiconductor ecosystem. Blue Origin evaluated sites across Central Texas with JLL because the region already had the aerospace density to justify a 2,000-person manufacturing campus.

The defense-tech adjacency accelerated the convergence. Army Futures Command headquartered in Austin since 2018 and Capital Factory's Center for Dual-Use Innovation created a standing interface between commercial technology companies and Pentagon acquisition programs. BAE Systems' $150 million sensor campus on Parmer Lane, Raytheon's THAAD radar operations, and the Palantir/Anduril Golden Dome software consortium all located in Austin for the same reason — proximity to both the tech talent and the defense acquisition bridge. When Golden Dome became the organizing framework for US missile defense, Austin already had the sensor manufacturers, the software developers, the Trusted Foundry, and the satellite hardware producers in place.

The semiconductor layer underneath it all is what makes the cluster structural rather than coincidental. SkyWater Fab 25 fabricates Trusted Foundry defense chips. Samsung's Taylor plant (11 miles from Blue Origin's Hutto site) produces Tesla's AI5 chips. The Terafab research fab at Giga Texas North Campus is prototyping the D3 chip for Starmind. Texas Instruments designs space-grade analog ICs 200 miles north in Dallas. The Cyclotron Institute certifies all of them 90 miles east. The aerospace companies in Austin don't just sit near chip manufacturing — they draw from it as a direct input.

The Texas Triangle — State-Wide Space-Industrial Corridor

The Austin MSA cluster is one node in a state-wide space-industrial corridor that spans the Texas Triangle from DFW to Houston to the Mexican border. Every step of the supply chain from chip design to orbital deployment exists inside this corridor. No other state contains all of them.

The Full Supply Chain — From Chip to Orbit

The Golden Dome Texas Corridor page maps the nine-step defense supply chain from chip design to launch. The aerospace corridor page adds the commercial and civil space programs that ride the same infrastructure. The steps are identical — the customers differ:

Step Defense (Golden Dome) Commercial / Civil Space Texas Operator
Chip design Rad-hard analog for interceptors and satellites Space-grade analog for Starlink, Starmind, commercial constellations Texas Instruments (Dallas), CesiumAstro (Austin — RF-SoC via Jariet acquisition)
Wafer fabrication Trusted Foundry for classified programs Commercial volume for Starlink/Starmind RF chips, automotive, industrial SkyWater Fab 25 (Austin), Samsung Taylor, Terafab Gibbons Creek (2027+), SpaceX Bastrop chip packaging
Radiation certification Every Golden Dome component Every commercial satellite component in LEO+ Texas A&M Cyclotron Institute (College Station)
Communications payload Starshield crosslinks, PWSA data transport Starlink phased arrays, commercial constellation comms CesiumAstro (Austin), SpaceX Bastrop
Sensor / EW integration Tracking satellite and interceptor payloads ISR payloads, Earth observation BAE Systems (Austin), L3Harris (DFW), Raytheon (Austin/DFW)
Satellite / spacecraft manufacturing PWSA tracking sats, Starshield relay sats Starlink/Starmind sats, Blue Ghost lunar lander, Elytra, Blue Ring, Orbital Reef modules SpaceX Bastrop, Firefly (Cedar Park), CesiumAstro (Austin), Blue Origin (Hutto), Intuitive Machines / Lanteris (Houston)

Launch SBST missions, PWSA constellation deployment Starlink, Starmind, Artemis, Blue Ghost, Project Kuiper SpaceX Starbase (Boca Chica — Starship, Falcon 9)

The defense supply chain and the commercial space supply chain share the same physical infrastructure, the same fabrication facilities, the same beam-line certifiers, and in many cases the same launch vehicles. A chip fabricated at SkyWater Fab 25 and certified at the Cyclotron Institute may end up on a Golden Dome tracking satellite or a commercial Starlink terminal — the path diverges at the integration step, not before. That dual-use convergence is why the Austin aerospace cluster and the defense technology corridor are the same corridor, not two adjacent ones.
