Musk Bastrop Complex
SpaceX Gigasat Factory · Starlink Terminal Manufacturing · Semiconductor R&D and Advanced Packaging · X Corp. HQ · The Boring Company HQ · Snailbrook
The Musk Bastrop Complex is a multi-entity, multi-facility concentration in Bastrop County, Texas — approximately 30 miles southeast of Austin along FM 1209 and the Colorado River — that has grown from a single Starlink terminal factory into one of the most operationally dense Musk-affiliated sites in the United States. Affiliates tied to SpaceX, X Corp., The Boring Company, and other Musk ventures now control over 1,000 acres in the area. The complex is anchored at Hyperloop Plaza (865 FM-1209), which serves as the registered headquarters for both X Corp. and The Boring Company, and hosts SpaceX manufacturing and office space.
The June 2026 Gigasat factory announcement — an 11-million-square-foot satellite manufacturing campus on 1,000+ acres — transforms the Bastrop footprint from a terminal factory with adjacent offices into a production site that exceeds Giga Texas by floor area. Combined with the existing Starlink terminal operation, the semiconductor R&D and advanced packaging facility ($17.3M Texas Enterprise Fund grant, $280M+ committed capex, 400+ new jobs), X Corp.'s relocated headquarters, The Boring Company's HQ, and the Snailbrook company town development, the complex now functions as a second Musk operational nucleus in the Austin metro — distinct from and complementary to the Giga Texas campus 13 miles to the west.

Gigasat: The Orbital Data Center Factory
The Gigasat factory is the centerpiece of the Bastrop complex — an 11-million-square-foot vertically integrated satellite manufacturing campus on over 1,000 acres, announced June 8, 2026, four days before SpaceX's IPO on Nasdaq (SPCX). The facility exceeds Giga Texas by floor area and is designed to produce the full AI satellite supply chain on a single site, from solar ingots through completed AI1 orbital data center spacecraft. SpaceX is targeting 1 GW/year of orbital AI compute by end of 2027, scaling to 100 GW/year by 2030. A 10 GW/year solar cell factory is already under construction on site. Full coverage at SpaceX Gigasat Factory.
Starlink Terminal Manufacturing
The existing Starlink terminal factory is the largest North American satellite manufacturing operation by output volume, producing consumer and enterprise Starlink user terminals at scale that no other US site matches. The operation vertically integrates SpaceX's Starlink commercial business and supplies the global subscriber base. The Gigasat expansion builds on this existing manufacturing substrate rather than starting greenfield — the workforce, supply chain, and operational base are already in place.
Semiconductor R&D and Advanced Packaging
The May 2025 Texas Enterprise Fund grant ($17.3M plus $280M+ committed capex) and 400+ additional jobs confirmed the semiconductor R&D and advanced packaging expansion that elevates Bastrop from a terminal factory to a node in the Tesla-SpaceX silicon pipeline.
Tesla designs AI silicon (AI5, AI6, AI7) at its Austin and global design centers. Samsung Taylor and Tesla Terafab fabricate the silicon. SpaceX Bastrop performs advanced packaging for radiation-tolerant orbital silicon variants destined for Starlink V3+ satellites, Starshield government satellites, and prospective Golden Dome SBI applications. The advanced packaging step — integration of dies into deployable modules with shielding, redundancy, and environmental hardening — is the bridge between commercial-scale fab output and orbital-grade hardware. SpaceX operates this step in-house, which is structurally distinct from the merchant advanced-packaging market that other satellite operators rely on.
X Corp. and The Boring Company
X Corp. (formerly Twitter) relocated its official headquarters from San Francisco to Bastrop in late 2024, citing the address at Hyperloop Plaza (Building 2, 865 FM-1209) in California court filings. X Corp. is now a subsidiary of SpaceXAI. X's real estate director Nicole Hollander stated that "X plans to significantly grow its Texas footprint, including opening new offices and hiring additional employees." A safety support center is operational at the site. Austin office staff are expected to relocate to Bastrop.
The Boring Company relocated its headquarters and engineering facilities from California to Bastrop in approximately 2023. The tunneling venture operates with a smaller on-site footprint than SpaceX but shares the Hyperloop Plaza campus.
Snailbrook
Snailbrook is an unincorporated company town under construction on the Colorado River east of Austin, intended as employee housing for SpaceX and Boring Company workers. Plans obtained by the Wall Street Journal showed 110 initial homes; Bastrop City Manager Sylvia Carrillo-Trevino has stated the site could accommodate 10 times that given the acreage controlled. The development includes the Boring Bodega commercial site and the Ad Astra school. Growth is constrained pending completion of a wastewater treatment facility (a deal between Bastrop, SpaceX, and local utility Corix), estimated roughly a year out as of early 2025. The 10+ square-mile compound has drawn community scrutiny over traffic, wastewater, and environmental impacts, including fines from state regulators.
Cross-Anchor Position
The Bastrop complex is integrated with multiple AustinIO-covered anchors through the SpaceX vertical stack and the Tesla-SpaceX silicon pipeline:
SpaceX Starbase (Boca Chica) is the deployment anchor for Bastrop-produced satellites — AI1 orbital data centers, Starlink V3+, and Starshield satellites are launched at Starbase using bus systems and orbital silicon flowing through the Bastrop pipeline. The Starbase Cluster groups Cameron, McLennan, and Bastrop counties as one operationally-integrated SpaceX vertical stack despite 350+ miles of geographic dispersion.
SpaceX McGregor Engine Factory (McLennan County) provides propulsion for Starbase deployment vehicles. McGregor and Bastrop are sister sites in the same vertical stack.
Tesla Giga Texas contributes the silicon design half of the pipeline. Tesla AI silicon (AI5 currently, AI6 and AI7 forward) flows through Samsung Taylor or Terafab fabrication, then through Bastrop packaging, then to orbital integration at Starbase.
Samsung Taylor as Tesla's captive-equivalent foundry produces the leading-edge silicon that Bastrop packages.
Terafab Production Facility (Grimes County) — as the production fab scales, Bastrop's advanced packaging role connects directly to Terafab-manufactured silicon destined for orbital deployment.
UT Austin TIE NGMM Center provides the federally-anchored 3DHI advanced packaging research substrate ($840M+ DARPA-coordinated program) that surrounds Bastrop's commercial advanced packaging operations.
Outlook
The Gigasat announcement fundamentally reframes the Bastrop complex. A Starlink terminal factory with adjacent offices was significant but not structurally distinctive at the giga-scale level. An 11-million-square-foot vertically integrated satellite manufacturing campus — producing the full AI satellite stack from solar ingots through completed AI1 spacecraft — combined with in-house semiconductor advanced packaging, an expanding corporate headquarters cluster, and a company town, makes Bastrop a Tier 1A strategic anchor and the second Musk operational nucleus in the Austin metro.
The near-term questions: whether AI1 satellite production begins on the 2027 timeline, whether the 6,500-satellite-per-year launch cadence is achievable (Starlink's entire constellation took years to reach 10,500), whether the solar ingot-to-satellite vertical integration operates at the cost and speed the orbital compute economics require, and whether Snailbrook's infrastructure constraints resolve on a timeline that supports the workforce the expanded complex demands.
