Dallas-Fort Worth Semiconductor
The Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is the birthplace of the integrated circuit. Jack Kilby built the first working integrated circuit at Texas Instruments (TI) in Dallas in 1958, and the region has since grown into one of the densest semiconductor concentrations in the United States. TI anchors the cluster from its Dallas headquarters, its Richardson research, design and manufacturing site, and its Sherman manufacturing campus, where the company continues to add fabs. Federal CHIPS and Science Act funding and the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund support the buildout.
Beyond TI, the DFW cluster spans several categories: GlobalFoundries in mature and specialty node manufacturing; Infineon Technologies in design and supply, including the former Cypress Semiconductor operations; Keysight Technologies in electronic measurement and semiconductor test; NXP Semiconductors in design and engineering; and a supporting base of wafer fab equipment service centers, electronic design automation (EDA) software offices, design houses, intellectual property (IP) licensing firms, distributors, and industrial gas and specialty chemical suppliers.
