Austin sits at the center of one of the densest semiconductor clusters in the United States. The industry's roots trace to Motorola's 1974 Oak Hill site (now NXP), the arrival of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in 1980, the Sematech research consortium in the late 1980s, and the IBM and Cirrus Logic design centers that anchored what became known as Silicon Hills.
The cluster now reaches past chip design into the upstream supply chain: wafer fabrication, equipment service centers, ultra-pure gases and chemicals, photomasks, vacuum and abatement systems, electronic design automation (EDA) software, intellectual property (IP) licensing, and back-end test and packaging. Its anchors include Samsung's advanced-node fab in Taylor north of Austin, the Tesla-led Terafab project, NXP's expanding Austin operations, and AMD's Austin design campus. Together they place Austin among the major semiconductor centers worldwide, alongside Phoenix, Hillsboro, Hsinchu and Pyeongtaek.
