Austin Semiconductor Ecosystem
Austin sits at the center of one of the densest semiconductor clusters in the United States. The region's industry roots trace to Motorola's 1974 Oak Hill site (now NXP), Advanced Micro Devices' arrival in 1980, the Sematech consortium in the late 1980s, and the IBM and Cirrus Logic design centers that anchored what became known as Silicon Hills. The 2026 ecosystem extends well beyond chip design into the full upstream supply chain — wafer fabrication, equipment service centers, ultra-pure gases and chemicals, photomasks, vacuum and abatement, EDA software, IP, and back-end test and packaging. Samsung's expanding Taylor advanced-node fab (north of Austin), the Tesla-led Terafab announcement in March 2026, NXP's $500M Austin expansion through 2027, and AMD's largest US design campus together place Austin in the front rank of US semiconductor concentration alongside Phoenix, Hsinchu, Pyeongtaek, and Hillsboro.
