IREN Sweetwater

IREN Sweetwater is the exemplar of the vertically integrated miner-cloud: a bitcoin miner that became a full AI-cloud operator, building, owning, and running its own GPU capacity rather than leasing to someone else. Sweetwater is its flagship gigawatt Texas campus, powered by renewable energy on the CREZ transmission grid built for West Texas wind.

Why it exists here

Sweetwater sits in Nolan County in the heart of the West Texas wind corridor, and the reason is transmission. IREN — formerly Iris Energy, a Sydney-listed bitcoin miner — built its business on grid-connected land in renewable-rich regions, and Sweetwater is its flagship Texas campus: 1,400 MW at Sweetwater 1 and 600 MW at Sweetwater 2, for 2 GW total. The high-voltage substation at Sweetwater 1 is energized and the first 200 MW liquid-cooled IT phase is under construction.

The CREZ substrate

Sweetwater's power advantage is a kind of inheritance the brownfield pattern does not usually name: not a dead industry's platform, but the state's stranded-transmission overbuild. CREZ — the Competitive Renewable Energy Zones — was a roughly $7 billion transmission program Texas completed in the early 2010s to haul West Texas wind to eastern demand centers. That transmission is why a campus in Nolan County can run 100% renewable at gigawatt scale without building its own generation: the wind and the wires were already there, built for an earlier purpose. IREN inherited the grid, not the plant.

The integrated model

IREN is what most crypto-to-AI converters are not: fully vertically integrated. It does not lease its buildings to a lab or a neocloud — it operates its own AI Cloud Services, delivering GPU clusters for training and inference directly to customers. It owns the land and power, builds the halls, installs the chips, and sells the compute, all under one public company. This is distinct from Beacon Point, where four separate firms split those functions; at Sweetwater, one firm performs all of them. Nvidia is both a supply partner and, via a share-purchase right tied to IREN's Childress campus, a shareholder.

What runs here

Sweetwater runs Nvidia silicon, designed for the Vera Rubin generation, serving IREN's own AI-cloud customers rather than a single named lab. Because IREN sells managed GPU capacity, the tenants are its cloud customers — a rotating set rather than one offtaker — and IREN does not disclose which customer runs what. The honest statement is that this is a merchant AI-cloud campus operated by its owner, on renewable power, with Nvidia as the anchor hardware and equity partner.

Where it fits

IREN Sweetwater is the integrated-miner-cloud exemplar. Where Beacon Point and Hubbard show compute functions split across companies, Sweetwater shows them collapsed back into one — a miner that climbed the stack to become an operator, landlord, and cloud provider at once. And where the other renewable-leaning campuses build their own generation, Sweetwater inherits the CREZ grid, making it the transmission-inheritance case as much as the miner-cloud one.

Last updated September 11, 2026. IREN reports 100% renewable via clean sources or renewable energy certificates. Capacity figures from IREN filings. Status: under construction, ramp 2027–2028.
