Crusoe Abilene Microsoft (Campus 2)
The Crusoe Abilene campus 2 is the exemplar of the merchant AI-factory model: a developer builds a self-powered data center and leases it to whichever lab or hyperscaler needs the capacity. It is best known for one fact — it is the capacity OpenAI walked away from, and Microsoft took.

Abilene is two campuses, not one. The name is used for two adjacent but separate sites on Lancium's land near Abilene, Texas. They have different owners, tenants, and deals. The combined footprint is about 2.1 GW.
| Campus 1 — Stargate | Campus 2 — Microsoft | |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | ~1.2 GW, 8 buildings, 875 acres | ~900 MW, 2 buildings |
| Status | Partially operational (~0.3 GW live) | Under construction (from Mar 2026) |
| Land | Lancium Clean Campus | Lancium (adjacent parcel) |
| Developer / builder | Crusoe | Crusoe (also owns and operates) |
| Compute owner / operator | Oracle (runs it as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure) | Crusoe (merchant AI factory) |
| Tenant / workload | OpenAI | Microsoft |
| Program | Stargate JV (OpenAI, Oracle, SoftBank, MGX) | None — standalone Microsoft deal |
| Chips | Nvidia GB200 (~450,000 planned) | Nvidia (next-generation) |
| Power | On-site generation (Lancium campus) | Dedicated on-site plant + battery storage |
How they got separated: In March 2026, OpenAI and Oracle cancelled a planned 600 MW expansion of Campus 1 after financing stalled and OpenAI's demand forecast shifted. Microsoft took a new adjacent build (Campus 2) instead — which is why both "OpenAI's Abilene" and "Microsoft's Abilene" are correct, and confusing.
Why it exists here
This campus sits next to the original Stargate site on Lancium's Clean Campus in Abilene, and it exists because of a reversal. In March 2026, Oracle and OpenAI abandoned their planned expansion beyond the initial 1.2 GW at the adjacent site after financing talks stalled and OpenAI's demand forecast shifted. Crusoe announced on March 27, 2026 that it would build a new, dedicated 900 MW campus for Microsoft instead. Land clearing began immediately.
The two Abilene campuses are separate and should not be merged: the original 1.2 GW OpenAI/Oracle site, and this 900 MW Microsoft site next door. Together they bring the combined Abilene footprint to about 2.1 GW.
The power model
Crusoe calls itself an "AI factory company," and the model is the merchant version of behind-the-meter: Crusoe develops, owns, and operates the campus, including a dedicated 900 MW on-site power plant with medium-voltage battery storage, and leases the finished capacity to a tenant. The two new buildings are each designed for 336 MW of critical IT load, the density the next generation of GPU racks requires. The first building is expected to energize in mid-2027, continuing the pace that took Crusoe from groundbreaking to two live buildings at the original site in under a year.
The water choice
The campus uses closed-loop non-evaporative liquid cooling — the coolant recirculates rather than evaporating, so on-site water use is a small fraction of an evaporative design. Delivered directly to high-density racks, liquid cooling is also what makes the 336 MW-per-building density workable in the first place. Water efficiency and compute density are solved by the same architecture.
What runs here
Microsoft is the confirmed anchor tenant of this campus, which makes it a Tier-1 named case rather than an inference: Crusoe's own announcement names Microsoft, running the campus on next-generation Nvidia silicon for large-scale Microsoft AI workloads. The adjacent original campus is a different tenant story — Oracle operates it for OpenAI, and it has been most widely associated in press reporting with OpenAI's frontier training. This site is Microsoft's; the run-level detail, as always, stays private.
Where it fits
Crusoe Abilene is the merchant-developer exemplar, distinct from the first-party campuses like Meitner (Google building for Google) and GW Ranch (Amazon building for AWS). It shows the layer of the market where capacity is built speculatively-fast and tenanted late: Nvidia even paid Crusoe a reported deposit to keep its hardware in the freed space. When a lab's demand forecast moves, a merchant campus can change tenants without changing a brick — which is exactly what happened here.
Last updated September 11, 2026. This is the Microsoft-tenanted 900 MW campus, distinct from the adjacent OpenAI/Oracle Stargate site. Status: under construction, first building mid-2027.
